Hon. Randy Kaplan, (Ret.) and Ligris + Associates Attorney Appointed to the Massachusetts Judicial Nominating Commission

BOSTON, July 22, 2025 – Ligris & Associates, P.C., a Boston law firm focused on real estate, business law, creditors’ rights, litigation and family law,, announces that the Hon. Randy Kaplan, (Ret.) has been appointed by Governor Maura Healey to serve on the Massachusetts Judicial Nominating Commission (JNC). The JNC plays a vital role in advising the Governor on the nomination and appointment of judges and judicial officers. Judge Kaplan’s one-year term commenced on May 29, 2025.

In a press release announcing the JNC’s new leadership, Governor Healey said, “The JNC does incredibly important work to identify the very best candidates to become judges who will uphold justice and the rule of law.”

“I’m deeply honored to be selected by Governor Healey to serve on the Judicial Nominating Commission,” said Judge Kaplan. “As a lifelong advocate for equal justice, I’m excited to support the Governor in appointing a new generation of judges and judicial officers who embody the highest ideals of our legal profession here in the Commonwealth.”

Judge Kaplan has demonstrated exceptional leadership and legal expertise throughout her distinguished career. Appointed as an Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Probate and Family Court in 2001 by Governor Jane M. Swift, she served until 2019, primarily in Suffolk, Middlesex, Essex, and Nantucket Counties. During her tenure, Judge Kaplan was instrumental in adjudicating complex family and probate matters, earning a reputation for fairness and deep legal acumen. After nearly 20 years of service, she now serves as a certified Mediator/Conciliator and focuses her practice on divorce mediation, conciliation and arbitration. Judge Kaplan is admitted to the Massachusetts Bar, U.S. District Court for Massachusetts and the U.S. Supreme Court. She also lectures extensively in all areas of family and probate law, and her wealth of experience is sought-after by colleagues and clients.

“Randy’s appointment by Governor Healey to this pivotal role is a testament to her unwavering dedication to public service and her impactful leadership within the legal community,” said Christos Viores, Co-Managing Partner at Ligris. “She embodies legal excellence and is truly deserving of this distinguished honor.”

The JNC is a non-partisan, non-political, and non-compensated Commission composed of 27 distinguished volunteers appointed by the Governor from a cross-section of the state’s diverse population. They screen judicial candidates and make recommendations to the Governor. Since Governor Healey took office, the work of the JNC has resulted in the nomination of 72 highly qualified judges and four Clerk Magistrates.
